We’ve been listening to working age blind and partially sighted adults about what they’d like to see from us. Many told us they wanted more chances to meet other people at a similar stage of life, and that fitted more easily around work, study, family life and other commitments. Somewhere to talk about the things that matter to them, share the ups and downs of everyday life and spend time with people who understand.

That’s why we’re introducing Local and Online Meet-ups for working age adults from across our region.

Local Meet-ups

Our Local Meet-ups are informal social gatherings where you can meet other people nearby, enjoy a drink, chat, build new friendships and spend time with people who understand. The first in-person gatherings will take place in Bristol, Bath, Salisbury, Swindon and Gloucester, creating opportunities for people from across our region to meet others living locally.

Online Meet-ups

Our Online Meet-ups explore a different topic each month, from AI and technology to travel, fitness, dating and building a social life. Hosted by our team and guest speakers with lived experience or specialist knowledge, they’re an opportunity to hear how other people approach everyday challenges, discover practical tips and life hacks, ask questions, swap ideas and join the conversation.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed or have been blind or partially sighted for many years, and whether you’re working, studying, looking for work or unable to work, you’ll find a relaxed, welcoming space to meet people who understand, share ideas and enjoy good conversation.

Come along to one session or join us regularly – it’s entirely up to you. Drop in, catch up or simply listen.

Could you help get these new meet-ups started?

We’re looking for friendly volunteers to help launch these new sessions across the region. We’re recruiting for two volunteer roles:

• Local Meet-up Hosts – welcoming people, supporting relaxed social gatherings and helping to create a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.
• Online Meet-up Co-hosts – helping our themed Zoom sessions run smoothly and encouraging great conversation.

Who are Local and Online Meet-ups for?

These sessions are designed for blind and partially sighted adults who are broadly at a working stage of life. You might be working, studying, looking for work, taking time out, raising a family or unable to work at the moment – whatever your circumstances, you’re very welcome.

Many of our daytime social groups are popular with retired people, so these new sessions offer an alternative with evening online discussions and local social gatherings aimed at people at a different stage of life.

I’ve never been to anything like this before. Will I fit in?

Absolutely. You can join in the conversation or simply listen, you’ll receive a warm welcome either way. Many people will be coming along for the first time too, and our team and volunteers will help everyone feel at ease.
